The short answer

Warren Township is resurfacing 24 streets covering 5.00 miles in 2026 at a contract cost of $945,800\. Separately, Somerset County closed Stirling Road at the Stony Brook bridge between Community Place and Dillon Court on August 3 for a full bridge replacement, with reopening expected mid December. The general detour is Mountain Avenue and Hillcrest Road. Vehicles over four tons are routed to Valley Road, King George Road, Mount Bethel Road and Mountain Boulevard.

## The 24 streets

The township announced the 2026 overlay program on June 10\. Here is the complete list, with the limits where the township specified them.

- Old Smalleytown Road, Stirling to Stiles
- Glenview Road, High Oaks to Loriann
- Upper Warren Way, Wells Lane to the south cul de sac
- Sage Drive
- Garden Street, west of Stirling
- Berryhill Road, west of Stirling
- Plainfield Avenue
- Gates Avenue
- Chatham Place
- Caldwell Place
- Summerhill Drive, Reinman to Overlook
- Brady Road
- Old Stirling Road, Mountain Avenue to the Interstate 78 bridge
- Blue Jay Court, Mountain View to Trails End
- Trails End Court
- Elm Avenue, Liberty Corner to Fourth
- First Street
- Rockage Road
- Softwood Way, Boxwood to Briarwood West
- Jessica Lane, west side of North Road
- Ponds Edge Lane
- Geiger Lane, Calico to Dory
- South Lane
- Spruce Lane

Old Smalleytown Road between Stirling and Stiles was closed for paving on August 6, so that one is already in progress.

## Five years of paving, in context

The township published the five year record alongside this year's announcement, which is unusually transparent and makes the trend readable.

| Year | Miles | Contract cost | Cost per mile |
| ---- | ----- | ------------- | ------------- |
| 2022 | 4.14 | $935,584 | $225,987 |
| 2023 | 5.14 | $1,075,676 | $209,276 |
| 2024 | 4.23 | $966,659 | $228,524 |
| 2025 | 4.92 | $1,037,046 | $210,782 |
| 2026 | 5.00 | $945,800 | $189,160 |

The cost per mile column is mine, not the township's, and it is the interesting one. Warren is getting more road per dollar this year than in any of the prior four, at $189,160 per mile against a four year range of $209,276 to $228,524\. That is a 10 to 17 percent improvement depending on which year you compare to.

Two plausible explanations, and the public record does not distinguish between them. Either bid conditions were favorable this year, or the specific mix of streets selected required less work per mile. Wider roads, deeper milling, or more curb and drainage work all raise the per mile figure independent of paving costs.

**Next up:** Valley View Road and Reinman Road are slated for the 2027 and 2028 phase, funded through a New Jersey Department of Transportation grant.

Want your street evaluated for 2027

The township directs residents to email dburo@warrennj.org to have a road considered for the next program year. If your street is not on the list above and is due, that is the channel.

## Stirling Road is the bigger disruption

This one is a Somerset County project, not a township one, which is why it does not appear in the overlay program.

The county is replacing Bridge L1014 over Stony Brook, between **Community Place and Dillon Court**. The road closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic on **August 3**. Driveway access is being maintained for properties inside the work zone throughout.

The existing bridge was rated overall in poor condition. The replacement is a single span precast rigid frame, and the roadway widens from 33 feet to 40 feet. The contractor is Underground Utilities Corp., awarded March 24\. Funding comes from a fiscal year 2023 New Jersey Department of Transportation Local Bridge Future Needs grant.

The county page describes the work as roughly five months. The township notice says reopening in mid December. Plan on December.

**Detours:**

- General traffic: Mountain Avenue, county route 622, and Hillcrest Road, county route 531
- Vehicles over four tons: Valley Road (512), King George Road (651), Mount Bethel Road (651) and Mountain Boulevard (527)

## Also open right now

Two water main breaks near **Chesterfield Drive and Woods Road** were reported by Warren Township Police on the morning of August 15\. Some residences may be without water while repairs are underway. Residents with issues are directed to contact police headquarters.

## The best way to get road alerts

Warren Township Police publish closures, water main breaks, storm advisories and outage notices through **Nixle**, and it is consistently faster than the township website. Recent alerts in the last 60 days have covered flood and tornado watches, widespread power outages, storm related multiple road closures, an excessive heat warning, and several individual closures.

Sign up for township emergency notifications through the township's notification page, and follow the police department's Nixle feed for the fastest updates.
